On EteRNA University & NOVA
jeehyung: Hello all [3:02 PM]
firedrake969: Hi jee [2:59 PM]
jeehyung: welcome to the biweekly eterna dev chat [3:02 PM]
Eli Fisker: Hi Jee :) [2:59 PM]
LFP6: JHey Jee! [2:59 PM]
LFP6: May I start off? [2:59 PM]
mat747: Hi Jee [3:00 PM]
jeehyung: Hi Everyone : ] [3:03 PM]
jeehyung: @LFP yes please do : ] [3:03 PM]
LFP6: I sadly have somewhere I need to go in ~5-10 minutes, so I had to have everything pre-typed, and I’ll probably have to check back for most of the response. [3:00 PM]
LFP6: This is in relation to a new concept a few players came up with, called Eterna University, or EternaU. Here’s a brief overview of our current thoughts: http://prntscr.com/2rx80i [3:00 PM]
LFP6: It is our hope to be able to set up an archive for past lessons (the ones on dev chat off weeks, the original idea of EternaU), and hopefully integrate current learning material into it (Flash tutorials, player guides, official explanations, maybe rolling out flash tutorial creation tools, etc.). [3:00 PM]
LFP6: We would like to know if you would be ok with us doing this, and if we could maybe run this through the main Eterna site (using player devs, once the packages are rolled out). [3:00 PM]
LFP6: The main discussion topic is here: https://getsatisfaction.com/eternagame/topics/what_platform_would_you_like_to_use_for_eterna_university_curriculum [3:01 PM]
jeehyung: @LFP I heard of this idea and this is truly amazing. We are of course ok with the idea, and yes, we would like to support some kind of integration with the main site [3:04 PM]
LFP6: Also, to make sure it get brought up, Machine had some great ideas for reorganization and clarification of the site: https://getsatisfaction.com/eternagame/topics/what_platform_would_you_like_to_use_for_eterna_university_curriculum#reply_13826746 [3:02 PM]
jeehyung: I think we can have our scientists occasionally help with the contents of tEternaU as well [3:05 PM]
LFP6: Great news! [3:02 PM]
Eli Fisker: Oh, that will be awesome [3:02 PM]
LFP6: (Machine, here that? XD) [3:02 PM]
machinelves: many thanks to jnicol for teaching the classes, and eli & mat747 for getting the ball rolling. thanks LFP6, great job pitching in! [3:02 PM]
jeehyung: @LFP thanks for the links. We'll definitely read them in [3:05 PM]
firedrake969: Jee, I sent you a PM. Did you recieve it? [3:02 PM]
machinelves: mat has done a lot of work with UI mockups, so he may also have some ideas, i haven't checked in yet [3:03 PM]
jeehyung: @firedrake yes I think I replied to them. [3:06 PM]
firedrake969: Yes, I replied back [3:03 PM]
jeehyung: let me check [3:06 PM]
firedrake969: It pertained to modification of the EteRNA logo [3:03 PM]
firedrake969: Sent Feb 8th, so four days ago [3:04 PM]
LFP6: Oh, Jee... You know that project I was asking for help on a while back? I was wondering if I could site you as a refference on my site for... I'm not sure how long, as I may or may not shift it away from presentation-mode. I would just like to properly reconize you for the info you gave. [3:04 PM]
jeehyung: @firedrake just read it. Yes that should be fine [3:07 PM]
firedrake969: Ok, thanks :) [3:04 PM]
jeehyung: @LFP we'll be honored to be referenced : ] [3:08 PM]
LFP6: And Jee, if you could give any thoughts on restrictions/when we would be able to get started on EternaU, it would be appreciated [3:05 PM]
LFP6: All right, thanks. :) [3:05 PM]
LFP6: Ok, I have to leave for honor band all-I'll check the log later. Have fun. :) [3:06 PM]
Eli Fisker: Bye LFP [3:06 PM]
machinelves: i think eli had a good point that keeping the momentum and starting immediately with an archive, whether it is weebly or the wiki, is good [3:06 PM]
machinelves: bye lfp6! :) [3:06 PM]
mjt2007: hey [3:06 PM]
firedrake969: Hi mjt [3:06 PM]
machinelves: and i certainly advocate main site integration whenever possible [3:06 PM]
firedrake969: By LF [3:06 PM]
mjt2007: i just had honor band last friday and satudrdahy [3:06 PM]
mjt2007: bye LF [3:06 PM]
jeehyung: To all participating in EternaU idea, how do you see its relationship with the current Wiki? [3:10 PM]
machinelves: currently the wiki is the default archive repository [3:08 PM]
machinelves: linking out to google docs [3:08 PM]
Eli Fisker: For my part this is where I plan put up content [3:08 PM]
Eli Fisker: In google docs as Machine mentioned [3:08 PM]
Eli Fisker: But having materials accessible from elsewhere in an organized manner is only a plus [3:08 PM]
machinelves: the wiki is a good default / launchspace since we already have access to it [3:09 PM]
machinelves: weebly or something easy and quickly scalable could function as an interim solution [3:09 PM]
Eli Fisker: I picked Google Docs as the WIKI didn't like to eat the programming statements and changed format [3:09 PM]
machinelves: and the last post of the forum link LFP6 posted describes potential main site mapping [3:09 PM]
Eli Fisker: And I can more easily add pictures there [3:09 PM]
machinelves: exactly [3:10 PM]
Eli Fisker: Nando just added a TeamViewer lecture he gave the other day [3:11 PM]
firedrake969: Oh, Jee, I have a question about an idea I have [3:12 PM]
jeehyung: @Eli, machine. I see - thanks for sharing ideas [3:15 PM]
jeehyung: @firedrake sure what is it? [3:15 PM]
Eli Fisker: And for those who don't know what we are talking about, here is an intro: [3:12 PM]
Eli Fisker: http://eternawiki.org/wiki/index.php5/EteRNA_University [3:12 PM]
firedrake969: https://getsatisfaction.com/eternagame/topics/method_of_assigning_points_given_for_player_puzzles_based_on_difficulty [3:12 PM]
machinelves: happy to help! thanks! [3:12 PM]
Eli Fisker: @Jee, np [3:12 PM]
machinelves: oh thanks for the link eli! [3:12 PM]
firedrake969: I'm not sure how it could be implemented. [3:13 PM]
Eli Fisker: Machine, np :) [3:13 PM]
Eli Fisker: Fire, actually Jnicol made a script that estimate solving time of remaining puzzles [3:14 PM]
jeehyung: @Eli thnaks for the link This is really helpful [3:17 PM]
firedrake969: Cool [3:14 PM]
firedrake969: That could be useful in my idea [3:15 PM]
Eli Fisker: moment [3:15 PM]
TomoeUzumaki: hello [3:15 PM]
jeehyung: @firedrake actually, we had a way to estimate the difficulty of the puzzles based on how existing algorithms solve them, but the guy who was working on it left the team so it has been suspended [3:18 PM]
mat747: fire - you may not what to see the estimate solving time of remaining puzzles [3:15 PM]
firedrake969: Oh, ok [3:15 PM]
jeehyung: we'll try to see if we can get that feature back up [3:18 PM]
hoglahoo: lol mat [3:15 PM]
firedrake969: Why is that? (mat) [3:15 PM]
firedrake969: And link? [3:16 PM]
mat747: its a year plus [3:16 PM]
firedrake969: xD [3:16 PM]
Eli Fisker: Fire, here it is: [3:16 PM]
Eli Fisker: http://eterna.cmu.edu/web/script/3616844/ [3:16 PM]
firedrake969: Thanks [3:16 PM]
firedrake969: It times out :L [3:17 PM]
hoglahoo: firedrake: thats the same one you were trying to get to before from my profile page [3:17 PM]
Eli Fisker: Give it more time, firedrake [3:17 PM]
Eli Fisker: default is set at 10 sec [3:18 PM]
firedrake969: How do I change it? [3:18 PM]
firedrake969: nvm, Is ee [3:18 PM]
firedrake969: I see* [3:18 PM]
Eli Fisker: http://prntscr.com/2ryifb [3:18 PM]
mat747: Jee - did you see the New sort by option idea [3:19 PM]
mat747: fire - http://prntscr.com/2ryj12 [3:20 PM]
jeehyung: @mat I did just now. This always happens , but it turns out we also have this feature almost implemented in the test server. But the student who has been working on it is busy working on NOVA integration now.. [3:23 PM]
firedrake969: Jee--is that what the NOVA labs puzzles are for? [3:21 PM]
jeehyung: I think we'll have him deploy the time period based sorting the first thing when he gets back from NOVA stuff. We do think it's a great idea [3:24 PM]
jeehyung: @firedrake yes. Those are puzzles tested by NOVA people [3:24 PM]
jnicol: hi everyone [3:22 PM]
firedrake969: thanks [3:22 PM]
firedrake969: hi jnicol [3:22 PM]
mat747: Hi john [3:22 PM]
Eli Fisker: Great, Jee [3:22 PM]
Eli Fisker: Hi John :) [3:23 PM]
mat747: Jee - thx - any idea of a timeframe [3:23 PM]
jeehyung: Hi jnicol [3:25 PM]
machinelves: hey jnicol, great job on the class! thanks so much! :D [3:23 PM]
jeehyung: @mat NOVA should be done around March, so hopefully we'll have him deploy the feature before the semester ends.. [3:26 PM]
jnicol: yw, another class right after dev chat :) [3:23 PM]
machinelves: yay! [3:23 PM]
Eli Fisker: Sweet! [3:23 PM]
firedrake969: :D [3:23 PM]
JR: how come my puzzle solver script timesout's easy puzzles -is my code that bad? [3:23 PM]
mat747: Jee - cool thx, how it helps to retain new players [3:24 PM]
jeehyung: @jnicol I heard about the EternaU efforts. Thanks for the great content [3:27 PM]
jnicol: my pleasure Jee :) [3:26 PM]
Eli Fisker: Ours as well :) Thx for the initiative [3:27 PM]
jnicol: Jee, when I add a link to a script in a puzzle description it does display as a link [3:27 PM]
jnicol: I'm guessing that is done on purpose? [3:27 PM]
jeehyung: @jnicol you mean it doesn't? [3:32 PM]
hoglahoo: kws told me some time back this is done on purpose - the word script is disallowed in links in profiles and descriptions - I am interested why too [3:30 PM]
jeehyung: ahh... I see [3:33 PM]
Eli Fisker: It would be real cool if one could run ones favorite script under a tab on ones profile [3:30 PM]
firedrake969: Huh [3:30 PM]
Eli Fisker: I would like to have Jnicol's lab summary script always at hand [3:30 PM]
Eli Fisker: to show me how many lab slots I have left [3:31 PM]
jeehyung: we blocked the use of keyword <script> because it'll be a great threat to security [3:34 PM]
firedrake969: True [3:31 PM]
Eli Fisker: So I didn't need to locate my favorite scripts each time under the scripting page [3:31 PM]
Eli Fisker: (Know it might not happen any time near, just an idea) [3:31 PM]
Eli Fisker: Ok [3:32 PM]
Eli Fisker: That makes sense [3:32 PM]
jeehyung: I'm not sure if I understand the issue properly. Is it the issue that one can't include the custom script tag in the profile? [3:35 PM]
firedrake969: Wait, is "<script> blocked, or "script"? [3:32 PM]
firedrake969: "<script"? [3:32 PM]
firedrake969: Bleh, can't type it. [3:32 PM]
firedrake969: "<script>"* [3:32 PM]
hoglahoo: it's the word "script", in my experience [3:32 PM]
jnicol: Here is the puzzle I tried to a link to a script [3:33 PM]
jnicol: http://eterna.cmu.edu/web/puzzle/3921662/ [3:33 PM]
jeehyung: ohhhh.... [3:36 PM]
jnicol: near the bottom, Who Was First [3:33 PM]
Eli Fisker: jnicol, you can link in a picture of the link [3:33 PM]
jeehyung: I see [3:36 PM]
Eli Fisker: then people can type the scriptadress [3:33 PM]
hoglahoo: or use the tinyurl as Brourd suggested [3:33 PM]
jeehyung: this must be a side effect of a wrong regular expression to check the script tag [3:36 PM]
jeehyung: Thanks for pointing this out - we'll work on fixing it [3:36 PM]
jnicol: ty [3:34 PM]
hoglahoo: :D [3:34 PM]
hoglahoo: Is there anything specific on the devchat agenda today? [3:36 PM]
TomoeUzumaki: jee, what were you saying earlier about nova? [3:40 PM]
jeehyung: @Tomoe Nova lab is planning to launch mini eterna on their website. They have new cool features implemented and they'll bring in some new players [3:44 PM]
jeehyung: All I'll have to leave in 6 minutes - please throw in final questions & suggestions [3:44 PM]
Eli Fisker: @Jee, I will like to report a bug [3:42 PM]
jeehyung: @Eli of course [3:45 PM]
machinelves: thanks to the team for all the hard work on NOVA! [3:42 PM]
Eli Fisker: The function Ctrl + left click, doesn't work in Past labs [3:42 PM]
Eli Fisker: It works in puzzles and active labs [3:42 PM]
jeehyung: @Eli - noted thanks for letting me know [3:46 PM]
Eli Fisker: np, Jee [3:43 PM]
jeehyung: Have to go now - thanks for all the discussions and suggestions today everyone [3:50 PM]
jeehyung: I'll post the chat log in the news item [3:50 PM]
