Eternacon/2018/Committee Meeting Chat Logs/4-25-2018

From Eterna Wiki

LFP6: ‎Hey all! It’s time for this week’s Eternacon planning chat ‎[4:02 PM]

Astromon: ‎looking forwards to seeing jen , and lfp6 (: ‎[4:02 PM]

Astromon: ‎yay! ‎[4:03 PM]

LFP6: ‎Jen said she probably won’t be able to make it today (or at least she’ll be late) ‎[4:03 PM]

whbob: ‎hi lfp6 ‎[4:03 PM]

LFP6: ‎So, perhaps we should start out with some updates ‎[4:04 PM]

Astromon: ‎oH ok ‎[4:04 PM]

LFP6: ‎As you may have noticed, we have a nice banner on the site thanks to Sharif ‎[4:04 PM]

LFP6: ‎We’ll keep that up for about a week in attempt to get more form submissions so that we can pick a date next week ‎[4:04 PM]

Astromon: ‎oh i see it now ‎[4:05 PM]

Astromon: ‎cool ‎[4:05 PM]

LFP6: ‎Currently at 9 responses, hopefully we can boost that number ‎[4:05 PM]

Astromon: ‎i have an update for mine ‎[4:06 PM]

LFP6: ‎August 11-12 is looking pretty good right now, but it would be good to make sure as many people as possible can join ‎[4:06 PM]

LFP6: ‎@Astro Oh? ‎[4:06 PM]

Astromon: ‎i want to not have it 11-12 aug, but if it is thats fine ‎[4:07 PM]

cynwulf28: ‎lol ‎[4:07 PM]

Astromon: ‎ill be attending digitally regaurdless of the dates ‎[4:07 PM]

cynwulf28: ‎sorry I’m late, was publishing a puzzle :-) ‎[4:07 PM]

Astromon: ‎heya cyn ‎[4:07 PM]

cynwulf28: ‎same ‎[4:07 PM]

cynwulf28: ‎and same ‎[4:07 PM]

Astromon: ‎haha nice puzzle cyn ‎[4:10 PM]

LFP6: ‎Also, talked with Rhiju and I’m glad to say funding this year is similar to last year, so we should be able to provide pretty well for everyone ‎[4:10 PM]

Astromon: ‎great! ‎[4:10 PM]

LFP6: ‎Uhm, I still need to go update the wiki ‎[4:12 PM]

LFP6: ‎Should probably do that in a moment ‎[4:12 PM]

cynwulf28: ‎assistance is always a plus for plebs like me ‎[4:12 PM]

LFP6: ‎Rhiju does want to know usernames of anyone he should contact directly to encourage them to come ‎[4:13 PM]

LFP6: ‎I know Astromon put together a general list of people who’ve been active recently ‎[4:13 PM]

cynwulf28: ‎well, EVERYONE, but we would need to hold Eternacon at Woodstock to fit them all ‎[4:13 PM]

LFP6: ‎Heh’ ‎[4:14 PM]

cynwulf28: ‎My guess is that many previous attendees will want to go like tomoeii, hoglahoo, Brourd, lroppy, and such…even if they are only online sporadically ‎[4:15 PM]

cynwulf28: ‎Jieux might never come, though I’d be the first to invite that reclusive genius ‎[4:15 PM]

Astromon: ‎true that ‎[4:15 PM]

LFP6: ‎I think he’s typically ran into conflicts ‎[4:16 PM]

LFP6: ‎Hopefully he can make it out ‎[4:16 PM]

cynwulf28: ‎And while we rarely see many players in chat…there are a number who make their activities known through the Labs…such as HarryS or Eli Fisker ‎[4:16 PM]

LFP6: ‎It would be nice to see Eli join us finally ‎[4:17 PM]

cynwulf28: ‎I think the quiet Lab players are often forgotten ‎[4:17 PM]

cynwulf28: ‎despite their contributions ‎[4:17 PM]

LFP6: ‎Indeed ‎[4:17 PM]

LFP6: ‎We can’t really talk about facilities or anything until we have a date, but is there anything special people want to see in terms of sessions? ‎[4:18 PM]

cynwulf28: ‎Do we have an idea of content yet from the rhiju team ? ‎[4:18 PM]

cynwulf28: ‎clearly people want to get the updates on what was covered last time ‎[4:18 PM]

LFP6: ‎The general theme consensus we came up with was “Engineering the Future of Citizen Science and Riboswitches in Biomedicine” ‎[4:19 PM]

cynwulf28: ‎wordy, but I 100% agree with the sentiment ‎[4:19 PM]

cynwulf28: ‎should work fine ‎[4:19 PM]

LFP6: ‎Talking about switches, player papers, and such ‎[4:19 PM]

LFP6: ‎Actually Omei had thrown out an interesting idea “RNA switches for Biomedicine: Citizen Science in Action” ‎[4:20 PM]

cynwulf28: ‎It’s more catchy than “An enumerative stepwise ansatz enables atomic-accuracy RNA loop modeling” at any rate ‎[4:20 PM]

LFP6: ‎Heh ‎[4:20 PM]

Astromon: ‎its catchy ‎[4:20 PM]

Astromon: ‎haha ‎[4:21 PM]

cynwulf28: ‎Omei’s suggestion ain’t bad ‎[4:21 PM]

LFP6: ‎Omei’s suggestion is a bit more concise, but a bit differently focused ‎[4:21 PM]

Astromon: ‎I like it the best ‎[4:21 PM]

cynwulf28: ‎(for inquiring minds: https://doi.org/10.1073/pnas.1106516108) ‎[4:21 PM]

cynwulf28: ‎Do we have any idea for who would be slated to be there from the Scientific Community? ‎[4:22 PM]

cynwulf28: ‎Like Greenleaf et al.? ‎[4:22 PM]

LFP6: ‎Not yet, I should bring that up ‎[4:23 PM]

LFP6: ‎Might want to have the date solidified first ‎[4:23 PM]

Astromon: ‎we were going to ask rihu about that ‎[4:23 PM]

Astromon: ‎he’s usually in the know on speakers ‎[4:23 PM]

cynwulf28: ‎I look forward to updates from Khatri ‎[4:25 PM]

cynwulf28: ‎Something fun for Eternacon might be superlatives…(the positive ones I mean) like who solved the most puzzles or something like that…just a though ‎[4:26 PM]

cynwulf28: ‎t ‎[4:26 PM]

Astromon: ‎good idea cyn ‎[4:27 PM]

whbob: ‎it was good to see that about 60 players submitted solutions in the TB round 4 ‎[4:27 PM]

Astromon: ‎who made the most puzzles too (: ‎[4:27 PM]

Astromon: ‎great point ‎[4:27 PM]

Astromon: ‎alot of new names too ‎[4:28 PM]

cynwulf28: ‎What’s happened on Eterna: Open TB R4, Open CRISPR, New support via Gates Foundation (what does this mean?), de novo Bots, The player Paper Pipeline (the hows and whys)… ‎[4:28 PM]

cynwulf28: ‎emigration from Flash update ;-j… ‎[4:29 PM]

Astromon: ‎it would be nice is results came out before eternacon (: ‎[4:29 PM]

Astromon: ‎iF* ‎[4:29 PM]

cynwulf28: ‎@astrosome of them definitely will ‎[4:29 PM]

Astromon: ‎for both CRISPR and tb4 ‎[4:29 PM]

Astromon: ‎sweet ‎[4:30 PM]

LFP6: ‎Hopefully we’ll have some Eterna 4 news to share by that time as well ‎[4:31 PM]

cynwulf28: ‎…New methods of analysis (wuami charts), what was that EternaBrain again?.., Do we still care about kissing loops?..How is the work of Jose Gomez-Marquez coming along?.. ‎[4:31 PM]

Astromon: ‎that would be cooL ‎[4:32 PM]

Astromon: ‎great points cyn! ‎[4:32 PM]

cynwulf28: ‎couldn’t remember the name of the Little Devices Lab ‎[4:33 PM]

Astromon: ‎the riboswithes? ‎[4:33 PM]

cynwulf28: ‎The Lego diagnostics ‎[4:34 PM]

cynwulf28: ‎that ran simultaneous in-the-field diagnostics via capillary action ‎[4:34 PM]

whbob: ‎he said it might take 5 years to develop a product ‎[4:34 PM]

cynwulf28: ‎true ‎[4:34 PM]

cynwulf28: ‎No fast track in the Medical world ‎[4:35 PM]

Astromon: ‎im not familar with those labs i dont think ‎[4:35 PM]

whbob: ‎maybe Eterna could help speed up the research ‎[4:35 PM]

cynwulf28: ‎hell, many Doctors I know repeatedly describe the Rapid progress in Cancer research and that only took 50 years ‎[4:35 PM]

cynwulf28: ‎@whbob …agreed ‎[4:36 PM]

cynwulf28: ‎at least progress is progress ‎[4:36 PM]

Astromon: ‎it seems it may get a bit faster with croud sourcing ‎[4:36 PM]

cynwulf28: ‎undoubtedly ‎[4:37 PM]

cynwulf28: ‎@LFP6 there was talk of making Eterna more internationally accessible, any word on that? ‎[4:37 PM]

LFP6: ‎Our original plan on that (a partnership with an international company) sadly fell through due to some licensing issues and such ‎[4:38 PM]

Astromon: ‎oH ‎[4:38 PM]

LFP6: ‎Though I’d still like to see that a priority in the process of the website side of Eterna 4, whenever we’re able to look at rebuilding that side of thing‎[4:38 PM]

LFP6: ‎*things ‎[4:38 PM]

Astromon: ‎cool ‎[4:39 PM]

LFP6: ‎On that note - I’d like to have a productive discussion about what we’d like to see out of the future of Eterna/Eterna 4. ‎[4:39 PM]

LFP6: ‎Anyone have suggestions for how we’d go about doing that? ‎[4:39 PM]

whbob: ‎the Eternacon banner did not catch my attention. Can some color be added? ‎[4:39 PM]

Astromon: ‎agreed bob ‎[4:40 PM]

Astromon: ‎maybe put it right below the lab window ‎[4:40 PM]

LFP6: ‎I feel like in the past there’s been a lot of nitpicking about small changes, when there could be broader discussion ‎[4:40 PM]

cynwulf28: ‎I think it’s just small on the screen…increasing the size a bit should help a lot ‎[4:40 PM]

LFP6: ‎@Whbob I can talk to Sharif ‎[4:40 PM]

whbob: ‎Eterna 4 has a long list of things and I don’t know what should have priority ‎[4:41 PM]

LFP6: ‎Might be interesting to talk about that, actually ‎[4:42 PM]

cynwulf28: ‎@LFP6 feel free to <virtually> elbow Dr. Das for me and remind him that he does a lot of awesome side-projects he never discusses publicly with us despite those details being in the public realm…i.e., Papers ‎[4:42 PM]

LFP6: ‎How people use Eterna, what would make people more effective, where we see ourselves in 5 years ‎[4:42 PM]

LFP6: ‎@Cyn Will do ‎[4:42 PM]

Astromon: ‎i know its mentioned alot but -lab coin ‎[4:42 PM]

LFP6: ‎It’s coming, it’s coming… ‎[4:43 PM]

Astromon: ‎that will direct players to the lab i think ‎[4:43 PM]

cynwulf28: ‎@LFP6 someone (looks at everyone but self) should confirm that nothing crazy has happened in regards to the usual accommodations we utilize ‎[4:44 PM]

LFP6: ‎Yeah, once we have a date we’ll need to jump on reserving everything ‎[4:44 PM]

whbob: ‎does anyone have a feeling about how the hard labs would perform ( speed) with html5 instead of flash? ‎[4:44 PM]

Astromon: ‎i think having the ability to test things like ED and wuami is good while waiting on synthesis ‎[4:45 PM]

LFP6: ‎That’ll probably need to be mgotrik ‎[4:45 PM]

cynwulf28: ‎@whbob that’s a wonderful thought ‎[4:45 PM]

Astromon: ‎maybe having more things like that for players to keep thier attention ‎[4:45 PM]

LFP6: ‎@Whbob: Great question. To some degree, it depends on how we do it. One approach for using the energy model would be compiling it with emscripten, which would probably either be comparable or slightly slower (at least if you’re using a modelrn browser0 ‎[4:46 PM]

LFP6: ‎The other option is server-side, which could potentially mean faster compute times ‎[4:46 PM]

cynwulf28: ‎@LFP6…side-thought…as Eterna moves forward and accrues more Data…and As Some of THAT Data is stored locally on Player computers…do we see a potential wall in the future where Data storage would need to be managed differently … ‎[4:46 PM]

Astromon: ‎@whabob, we surely need a faster way to do lab calculations for future hard problems ‎[4:47 PM]

cynwulf28: ‎to maintain functionality ‎[4:47 PM]

LFP6: ‎Cyn: How so? ‎[4:47 PM]

Astromon: ‎i thing many inputs will be the norm in future labs ‎[4:47 PM]

cynwulf28: ‎@LFP6 such as in the case where a person with (a lot of) Data already on their computer runs into memory issues on their side of things due to the amount of Data that Isn’t Server-Side…I’ve never been sure about the exact proportions ‎[4:49 PM]

cynwulf28: ‎Maybe that’s just a flash thing ‎[4:49 PM]

whbob: ‎a question might be " how many servers would be needed to manage 100 hard lab players?" ‎[4:49 PM]

cynwulf28: ‎Hmmm ‎[4:49 PM]

LFP6: ‎I’m not sure that specifically should be an issue, but there are ways to handle that ‎[4:49 PM]

LFP6: ‎Whbob: Yeah, we still need to look into and weigh our options ‎[4:50 PM]

cynwulf28: ‎It was simply a thought I had never heard discussed before (so I assume blissfully that nothing bad can ever happen :-D ) ‎[4:50 PM]

cynwulf28: ‎@LFP6…thought…if specific sequence folds WERE stored server side for ‘Hard Lab’ puzzles…that would save time player side right? ‎[4:52 PM]

cynwulf28: ‎since I have to refold every @#$% sequence every time I open the Lab page (very time consuming=lame) ‎[4:53 PM]

LFP6: ‎Folds are already cached, actually ‎[4:53 PM]

cynwulf28: ‎could have fooled me ‎[4:53 PM]

LFP6: ‎So you shouldn’t have to refold for an existing solution ‎[4:53 PM]

cynwulf28: ‎100% not true in my case ‎[4:53 PM]

LFP6: ‎I’ll have to ask Nando ‎[4:53 PM]

LFP6: ‎Anyhow now since we’ve gone off the rails a bit - any further Eternacon thoughts? ‎[4:54 PM]

cynwulf28: ‎the only saving happens while the windo is open…bu then I max out data and flash crashes resetting everything. If I refresh/reopen page in another window/tab it ALWAYS resets the fold for me ‎[4:54 PM]

cynwulf28: ‎@LFP6 thank you ‎[4:55 PM]

whbob: ‎the wuami charts are an example of fast server side computation combined with cached results ‎[4:55 PM]

tone: ‎I’ve had a long run of days not crashing… ‎[4:55 PM]

cynwulf28: ‎agreed. I fell in love with this feature instantly ‎[4:55 PM]

cynwulf28: ‎**continues rant: what happens for wuami charts doesn’t happen for me in Lab…but the Wuami cache works beautifully ‎[4:56 PM]

cynwulf28: ‎@LFP6 what service do we plan to use for Digital Feed? ‎[4:57 PM]

cynwulf28: ‎Stream ‎[4:57 PM]

Astromon: ‎cooL tone , were those the hard labs? ‎[4:57 PM]

Astromon: ‎abcdec and inc* ‎[4:58 PM]

LFP6: ‎@CynWulf Zoom ‎[4:58 PM]

tone: ‎Yes, abcdec mostly, some inc ‎[4:59 PM]

LFP6: ‎Seemed to work well last year (aside from a couple wonky antics from myself!) ‎[4:59 PM]

Astromon: ‎good no need to relearn a streaming service ‎[4:59 PM]

cynwulf28: ‎indeed Astro ‎[4:59 PM]

LFP6: ‎Luckily the switch from BlueJeans last year wasn’t bad ‎[4:59 PM]

cynwulf28: ‎good ‎[4:59 PM]

LFP6: ‎All right, I think it’s time we wrap up ‎[5:00 PM]

cynwulf28: ‎motion to adjourn? ‎[5:00 PM]

cynwulf28: ‎;-P ‎[5:00 PM]

LFP6: ‎Thanks everyone for coming, and make sure everyone gets that form filled out! ‎[5:00 PM]

Astromon: ‎do you guys think we should do another puzzle solving session this year? ‎[5:00 PM]

cynwulf28: ‎Thank YOU ‎[5:00 PM]

Astromon: ‎oH ok thanks everyone! ‎[5:01 PM]

whbob: ‎thanks lfp6. @ astro- yes ‎[5:01 PM]

cynwulf28: ‎@Astro…we should have ON-SITE computers for scubs like me who only have a home PC ‎[5:01 PM]

LFP6: ‎@Astro I think so, and we seem to have a nice system worked out ‎[5:01 PM]

LFP6: ‎@Cyn We typically do - I’ll make sure to add that to the todo list, thanks ‎[5:01 PM]

cynwulf28: ‎I sat quietly in a corner Last year ‎[5:01 PM]

Astromon: ‎cooL i can get that worked out< ‎[5:01 PM]

Astromon: ‎ill ask hog if hed like to make the puzzle per usual ‎[5:02 PM]

cynwulf28: ‎heh ‎[5:02 PM]

Astromon: ‎good idea cyn ‎[5:02 PM]

cynwulf28: ‎ty ‎[5:02 PM]
