A riboswitch is a sequence in mRNA that binds a target molecule to regulate production of the encoded protein. This can be accomplished by either promoting or prematurely aborting transcription or translation.

Binding of the target molecule to the aptamer domain of a riboswitch induces a conformational change that alters transcription or translation.
