External loop.

An external loop is a loop that contains both ends of the RNA molecule and at least one adjoining stack. External loop energy is calculated in a manner similar to that of multiloops.

In EteRNA, this structural element is also commonly referred to as dangling ends, hook, open loop, or starting loop.
